Industrial Designers Society of America

Industrial Designers Society of America IDSA is the voice of the industrial design profession, advancing the quality and positive impact of design.

IDSA's mission is threefold:

  • Lead the profession by expanding our horizons, connectivity and influence, and our service to members
  • Inspire design quality and responsibility through professional development and education
  • Elevate the business of design and improve our industry's value

Designers are at the forefront of cultural change, as shown by Mark Kimbrough's inro to the 2006 IDSA national Conference:

2006 IDSA National Conference Chair There are many events occurring around the world, which are having profound implications on us as designers. Design and designers have always had a hand in shaping each wave of industrial, economic and social change. Right now, we are at the tipping point of major change once again. We are facing a future of unprecedented competition in business and intense pressure to deliver quality products and services that meet the needs and expectations of a 21st century society. Today, we're part of a networked global economy in which national prosperity will increasingly depend on design, creativity and intellectual property.

Issues surrounding the global economy, in sourcing, out sourcing, geo-political unrest, technology overload and the de-humanization within our society, all grossly effect our profession.

The 2006 National Conference, is about the idea that we break through our preconceived notion of self-limitation and connect to a new awareness; a global awareness. We will explore the elements of change by examining the confluence of ideas and thinking both within and outside of our design profession. This conference will be less about equipping ourselves with the "answers," and more about exposing questions and unrealized opportunities. Design is synonymous with change. And...Change is the only constant.
