Online Collaboration to Write & Edit Your Book
by Carolyn Allen
My career in content development actually started so long ago you might think I was a kissin' cousin of Gutenberg! My first published "chapbook" was actually typeset on an IBM Composer -- I challenge you to remember THAT wonder of modern technology with variable spacing and justification, no less!
Today's content development -- from books to serials to websites and blogs has put the emphasis on the "message" not the medium. But the hard work is still in creating the ideas, winnowing them, getting feedback, winnowing some more... in other words, creative collaboration. The value of the proverbial "Startrek mindmeld" hasn't changed.
But, the old days of printing your manuscript dozens of times times and mailing it to editors, friends and family for feedback can be over and done with.
Discovering... and learning to use ... online tools for collaboration is now a paintbrush for the creative content developer. We're no longer "just" a writer. We can write, design, edit, publish and promoter our ideas. And we can collaborate with a team to sharpen every word, every nuance, every iteration of the birth of an idea.
You can start with a process as simple as using email or participating in an online publishing platform such as FastPencil or a dozen other writers' websites.
But a new generation of Web interactivity is evolving in which personalized and electronically enhanced tools can be used to edit and expand your work. We haven't seen anything yet!
Take a look at Google Docs and Google Wave. At new releases of Garage Band by Apple, and other creative software developers. Wow! The interactivity is blowing my mind. A book
collaboration team can provide you with diverse feedback, can help you request and trust strangers who become team members...and build new alliances around the globe. Think about that. You can now collaborate "around the globe". You. Not a megapublisher. You.
That's an idea based on collaboration for collaboration...for collaborators!
