Cup'a Sunshine for Women to Foster Strong Women
I listened to a talk given by Hillary Clinton in which she said that US development aid is going to be more focused on women. Wow! Why's that? She reported that research is finding that, "If you teach a man to fish you feed him forever. Teach a woman to fish and you feed a village!"
Microlending around the world has found that women not only create small businesses for their community, but they strengthen their family, improve their own self-esteem and leadership capabilities. We need that strength in EVERY neighborhood! That's what Cup'a Sunshine is about! Strengthening our women!
Music Magic ... to Build Stronger Women
I wrote "Music Magic" with that concept in mind. Self esteem is built. It develops when we have knowledge and skills; friends and family. And drive to accomplish something good.
Mari and her mother are the heart of this story -- but the story gathers in the whole neighborhood. Together they use their talents, desire for a strong, safe community, and their network of neighbors, family and friends to make a difference. This is the foundation of my motivation to build and support more sustainable communities.
Dedication to My Spiritual Sister
But it gets more personal than that. "Cup'a Sunshine" is inspired by a very special friend who I shared many a "cup'a cup'a" with.
Trudi Tunick was the best friend anyone could have. She was a quiet soul with deep love and compassion. She was the first friend I made after moving to the big city of Los Angeles. We became spiritual sisters, supporting one another through good times and tough times. She encouraged my writing and my art. I enjoyed her painting and her ideas and travels. And her delicious cups of tea! We gardened together. We took day trips to see nature and music and to explore local parks. Trudi died a year ago... before I got the "Backyard Blessings" series of inspirational essays published... and before "Music Magic" saw the sunshine of the day, as well. But she was my first reader, my first supporter. And she knew how important her encouragement was... because she was an artist as well.
Cup'a Sunshine ... Here's to Stronger Women!
So, "Cup'a Sunshine" is dedicated to the loving memory of my spiritual sister, Trudi. What we started by sharing many a cup of tea and loving times will continue as YOU share a cup'a love and sunshine with your neighbors, family members, friends and bask in the sunshine, yourself!
